Sardine Festival launched in style

The celebrity cook-off was most entertaining.

ALTHOUGH there is still no sign of those elusive little fish, sardine season has officially started with the launch of the annual Sardine Festival, at a stylish and entertaining brunch at Pennington’s elegant Botha House.

The event, hosted by Ugu South Coast Tourism, was well attended, with a good contingent of tourism members, area committee representatives and the media enjoying it.

One of the highlights was the Celebrity Cook-Off, compered by popular print, radio and television personality Terence Pillay. Turning up the heat in the celebrity kitchen were South African cricketer Pat Symcox, radio and television personality Alain Tardin and previous Survivor South Africa winner Vanessa Marawa.

Guests also enjoyed a preview of the hot-off-the-press winter edition of the Southern Explorer route guide and Style magazine.

Everyone at the launch agreed the Sardine Festival entertainment programme looked great and that it would add plenty of sparkle to the South Coast’s July holiday season.

Festival events include the Powerade Sardine Half-Marathon, the Burry Stander Mountain Bike Race, the Ugu Jazz Festival, the Mallards Mercury Ski-boat Festival, the three-day Sardine Run Golf Challenge and an interesting Zulu cultural event, the Maiden Ceremony.

“The bar has been set higher for 2015,” said tourism chief executive Justin Mackrory. He thanked everyone who attended the launch.
