Golden girl brings home gold
She has qualified for the World Masters' Championships which will be held in Paris next year.
ONE is never too old for athletics, says Susan du Bruyn of Manaba.
Susan (66), who started athletics while she was still at school, won five medals at the South African Masters’ Athletics Championships (SAMA) which were held in Rustenburg in April.
The SAMAs cater for men and women over the age of 35. They consist of sports such as long jump, throwing events like the javelin or discus, races from the 60m indoor right up to the marathon, cross-country, race walking or relays.
Susan won two gold medals for heavy throw and hammer throw and three silver medals for weight pentathlon, shot put and discus.
Susan, who was a model in the past, says God is her inspiration. “God gives me the strength to do what I do,” she said, adding that Mathew 6 verse 33 keeps her going.
She has also qualified for the World Masters’ Athletics Championships which will be held in Paris in March next year.
“I am grateful to have made it this far, but I am not sure if I will have the funds to go to Paris,” said Susan, who explained that she has to pay for her own transport and accommodation when she competes in the championships.
She added that she doesn’t have a trainer and does her own training. “I am truly blessed that God has given me the strength to do this sport at this age,” she said and also revealed that she follows no special diet.
Susan says she doesn’t train much, only trains when it’s close to championships. “It is not about how often you train or how big or strong you are, but it is all about the technique,” she concluded.
