‘Chicken’ is a purr-fect winner

The rescued moggie is the coast's top cat.

GREEN-eyed ‘Chicken’, a cat rescued from Sea Park, is officially the best domestic cat on the coast.

The star feline walked away with the Top Cat 2014 title at this year’s Natal Provincial cat show at the Assagay Hotel last Saturday. Another rescue cat took third place.

As a kitten, Chicken was found abandoned in a local school’s sandpit and taken to Harmony Hill’s Animal Hotel’s Cat Cradle where Renate Haussmann nurtured and raised him.

If you are wondering how Chicken got his name, a diet of ‘chicken moo’ was the only food  Renate could get him to eat when he was a eight days old. “A diet of mashed chicken literally saved Chicken’s life,” she said.

Chicken recently won the most prestigious South African Cat Council’s 2014 Domestic Pet of the Year title in Gauteng.

“Chicken’s success story is proof that the ugly duckling fairytale doesn’t only apply to swans,” said Renate.
