Port Shepstone’s Murray taps in to success
He is passionate about industrial design and holds a Btech degree.
INNOVATIVE, sculptural and original is how the judges described the outstanding entries received in this year’s Cobra Design Competition, which called for kitchen mixers incorporating induction heating technology to generate instant on-demand water.
Competition was tough but Murray Sharp from Port Shepstone managed to scoop the top prize of R30 000 in the professional category with his sleek Lynx mixer.
Murray is passionate about industrial design and holds a Btech degree from the University of Johannesburg. He made a name for himself last year when he came second in the first Cobra Design Competition.
He currently works at a retail design company Barrows Design and Manufacturing in Durban. His Lynx mixer mixer harnesses the full potential of induction heating by supplying on-demand boiling water. It also features an electronic user interface for various functions including pre-setting water temperature and specific volumes for cooking and baking.
“The designs illustrated how technology is starting to impact plumbing,” said Natie van der Westhuizen, Cobra Manufacturing and Technical Director.
“Aside from saving energy, we saw this impact in the types of materials utilised, with good use of magnets and magnetic materials as well as induction heating principles,” he added.
