South Coast Striders conquer Comrades Up Run

Thousands of runners made their way from Durban to Pietermaritzburg for the annual ultra marathon on June 14.

Comrades Marathon never fails to disappoint in terms of dishing up the agony and ecstasy of this great race, run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg this year.

There were no surprises when Peter Chidzungu was the first Strider home in a shade over six and a half hours.

But there may have been some when champion tennis player Daniel Francesconi was next as his idea of training is to chase the ball around the court, or more accurately make others do that.

The women did exceptionally well, with Hope Mortimer possibly the first female Striders to finish in under nine hours and comfortably so.

Then came Christina Ahlers, Hope’s sister Grace, Jade du Toit and Victoria Forshaw, all some way under the 10 hour mark. Jade’s sub-10 on debut was remarkable.

There were solid runs from the regulars, who can be pleased with their efforts.

As is often the case, not everyone who had hoped to run made it to the start, and a few had to stop along the way, either missing the required time or not feeling well enough to continue.
