Remembering Shobashobane

A team last week visited what was once a troubled area on the South Coast.

A GROUP of church leaders led by Reverend Danny Chetty, from Practical Ministries, visited Shobashobane recently to honour the victims of the Christmas Day massacre in 1995 when 19 people died.

The visit was not only to remember those who had died in the massacre, but also to inspire hope for future generations.

A prayer service was held whereby community members rejoiced in song and worship and were encouraged to keep on holding on to peace and their faith in God.

A large cross was planted at the entrance to the village and various speakers emphasised the signifance of the cross and the purpose it will serve. Mike Long, a friend of Practical Ministries and resident of Umtentweni, handed out more than a hundred crosses as a reminder of the day.

After a visit to the grave sites, the community looked on as Reva Johnston, a teacher and PM member, officially launched the Shobashobane Games Day with two newly formed soccer teams competing for the day’s accolades.

Durban United played Shobs United and after much action and local support, the teams drew. Both teams received medals and various sports items were handed out to the community.

“The highlight of the visit was the presentation of educational school packs that will make the 2015 school year more exciting,” said Rev Chetty.

“Dr Douglas Dziva and Dr Luke Ngoetjana from KwaZulu Christian Council also launched the ‘healing of memories’ programme which will help towards healing and reconciliation as the community moves forward,” said Rev Chetty.

Many speakers praised the work done by Rev Chetty, who has been with the community since the day of the massacre and has helped rebuild the entire village.

“He is the preacher who has no sermon but only action,” said Amos Nywose.

The community of Shobashobane thanked all for making their Christmas a special one.
