Soccer star Ayanda called up for Bafana Bafana
The tall Orlando Pirates defender said he will not only be representing his country but also his home town Port Shepstone, and Gamalakhe where he was born.
GAMALAKHE born soccer player Ayanda Gcaba has left to join the Bafana Bafana squad that will face Algeria, Ghana and Senegal when the 2015 Afcon tournament kicks off in Equatorial Guinea this Saturday.
Bafana Bafana, ranked 11th in Africa, will take on the number one ranked African side, Algeria on Monday, January 19.
Gcaba, who is a tall Orlando Pirates defender, said he will not only be representing his country but also his home town Port Shepstone, and Gamalakhe where he was born.
When he received the call from Ephraim ‘Shakes’ Mashaba, Bafana coach, Gcaba was preparing to come home until training restarted.
“Ï had not been in the starting line-up with my current team for several matches before the end of the year, so I am still finding it hard to believe I have been given this chance,” said Gcaba. ”When I was playing for Gamalakhe United, I never imagined that a day like this would come.”
The experience of playing in the Afcon tournament for the first time he says is ‘beyond measure’ and he wants to use this rare opportunity to cement his place in the national team.
