South Coasters scream for ice cream

The old-fashioned tunes caused one man to chase the van down the road in his underwear!

NOTHING brings childhood memories flooding back quite like the cheerful chime of an ice cream van.

The South Coast recently got its very own ice cream van,  Soft Twirls, owned by Louis and Chantel Gonsenhauser of Manaba.

And by the sounds of it the van is bringing much joy to both young and old.

Louis said the old-fashioned tunes prompted one elderly man to sprint out of his home in his underwear.

“The man said he didn’t know why he ran out of his house to follow the van,  he just did it,” he said, laughing.

The coast’s long, hot summer days mean a lot of people trying to cool down and what could be better than a cold and creamy cone delivered to your door.

After just 10 days, Louis and Chantel had served 2 000 cones, an astonishing 200 a day. This equates to between 20 and 25 litres of ice cream per day and Louis adds their record so far is 32 litres in one day.

So far, the furthest point the van has reached is Anerley – and then they ran out of stock, not customers.

You can expect to see the cheerful ice cream van on the roads daily between 9am and 3pm and between 5pm and 9pm. The couple also stops and serves ice cream to staff at businesses.

Chantel said that although the hours are long hours and the weather sometimes stiflingly hot, the reaction from the customers makes it all worthwhile.
