PORT Shepstone High won the preliminary round of the Daily News and Rotary Club of Hibiscus Coast (Margate and Uvongo) Team Talk competition held at Suid-Natal High last Thursday.
The Port Shepstone High team, represented by speakers Sumaya Habib, Nerona Sook and Melissa Taleni, spoke about ‘Is sympathy that simple?’
Suid-Natal High speakers Carla du Plessis, Charne Pretorius and Rene de la Rey, spoke on ‘Poverty’, finished second and will join Port Shepstone High in the semi-final to be held in Durban.

Seven schools took part – Suid-Natal High, Southcity Christian College, Mcushwa High School, Port Shepstone High, Sister Joan’s High, Creston College and Margate Middle School.
Winning the best speaker at the competition was Rene de la Rey from Suid-Natal High.
The Rotary Club of Durban, Umgeni, introduced a team speaking competition for pupils 35 years ago.
The project grew and it was taken over by Rotary District 9270 and now District 9370. The competition involves 19 Rotary clubs and 80 schools throughout KwaZulu-Natal.

Rob Gilligan, president of the Rotary Club of Hibiscus Coast (Margate and Uvongo), said the winners won a floating trophy shield and a cheque for R20 000 which will be used to improve the facilities at an underprivileged school nominated by the team.
The Daily News also presents library books to the schools of the top three teams.
