‘Solar-saver Gang’ strikes again
Pensioners have fallen prey to these smooth-talking salesmen posing as Eskom staff.
EVERYONE is eager to slash electricity bills, but don’t be duped by the infamous ‘Solar-saver Gang’ that is currently operating in the Ramsgate and Margate areas again.
The scam is infamous countrywide and has even featured on Carte Blanche.
Police have issued a warning to homeowners – especially pensioners – to beware of the conmen who pose as Eskom employees.
The fraudsters claim that they have a device that will reduce electricity bills by R350 a month.
“A few weeks ago a couple in Glenmarkie Road, Ramsgate was swindled,” said police spokesman, Captain Gerald Mfeka.
“The so-called Eskom employee told his victims that his name was ‘Meleous’ and he offered them a solar water heater device ‘on special for only R2 500’. The pensioners foolishly paid cash.
The fraudster then asked for a credit card as well ‘to sort out monthly payments’ and the pensioners were suddenly another R16 000 poorer,” said Captain Mfeka.
The man left once the payment had gone through and said he would come back to install the device. Too late, the couple became suspicious and called the police.
Captain Mfeka advised people to double check with Eskom if anyone came calling… or phone the the investigating officer, Detective Captain Gophichard Devrak, at 082 3327208 or 039 3129831.
