HCM wants to extend speed camera contract

The municipality says it does not have the infrastructure or the budget to maintain the equipment.

HIBISCUS Coast Municipality has asked for approval from council to extend the contract between it and Traffic Management Technologies (TMT).

The contract commenced in November 2013 and will  end in October this year. HCM signed this contract with TMT for the supply, installation and maintenance of digital speed red light violation cameras and back office services for a period of three years. The main aim was to assist the municipality with speed enforcement on the roads.

On Tuesday, at a council meeting held in Gamalakhe, the speaker asked council for approval to extend the contract, due to the municipality not having the infrastructure or budget to maintain the equipment.

At the beginning the agreement was that the company would work for three years then the municipality would take over. It was also agreed that the company would give its infrastructure to the municipality after this time.

When Councillor Sfundo Ngwane of the Inkatha Freedom Party asked how it was possible that the municipality now did not have the infrastrcuture, it was said that there were insufficient funds to maintain the cameras.
