Mbango river turns green
Living with the nauseating smell of raw sewage has infuriated residents in Oslo Beach and Mbango.
UNTREATED raw sewage continues to spill into the Mbango River. Businesses and homeowners living near the river have now had enough of the stench and algae in the river.
Many people contacted the Herald this week and are furious with both municipalities for not acting and solving the problem. “I have called Ugu District Municipality on many occasions and nothing has been done to fix the problem,” said an employee at a local business.
The constant smell of sewage has become unbearable, forcing residents to keep their windows and doors closed. Some have closed their businesses and moved on.
“You cannot leave your house open because of the revolting sewage smell. Living with the stench of raw sewage is not acceptable,” she added.
“Complaints have been made to Ugu District Municipality since 2010, which, to date, have not been addressed,” said one irate resident. “Why must we suffer at the hands of Ugu?” he asked.
He added that last year he had seen thick blobs of raw sewage flowing along the river from the pump station.
Another concerned ratepayer said, “Reports have been in the paper regarding raw sewage seen in the river but that’s about it. What’s the use of having all these environmentalists who can’t take action in solving this ongoing problem?” he asked.
Ward 18 councillor Carole Potter said she had asked for urgent intervention from the municipalities into the ongoing problem. The Herald received information before going to print that the pump station had been broken into.
A comment from Ugu District Municipality could not be obtained at the time of writing.
