‘Water shedding’ now a reality

Water restrictions have been implemented by two municipalities in the Ugu district.

NOW ‘water shedding’ is adding to the woes of people living in the Umuziwabantu and Vulamehlo areas which have been hit by one of the worst droughts in history.

Ugu District Municipality has been forced to install water ‘restrictors’ in some areas while in others water will be cut off entirely for periods.

“Unfortunately, sources are just running dry,” said Ugu spokesman, France Zama.

“The district – among others in the province – has been declared a drought node.”

Umgeni Water spokesman Shami Harichunder confirmed that they would soon ask Ugu to reduce water consumption by 30 percent throughout the district.

He was speaking at Umgeni Water’s Water Resource and Innovation Conference held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli ICC recently where researchers discussed the latest innovations in the supply of water.

Three dams on the South Coast are under stress at levels between 45 and 50 percent.

“We are worried that we are back to the same situation we were in last year, in spite of rains in between,” said Mr Harichunder.

Ugu has asked households and businesses to refrain from using hosepipes, sprinkler systems, automatic flushing urinals and the watering of gardens.
