Aunt’s boyfriend handed a life sentence for raping girl (10)
A virginity test proved crucial to the outcome of the case.
A MAN (53) was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Scottburgh Regional Court on Tuesday last week after being convicted of three counts of rape.
The three counts of rape were taken as one for the purpose of sentencing and the accused was sentenced to life imprisonment.
The incidents happened in 2011 when the girl was 10 years old.
She and her sister were orphans living with their aunt who was dating the accused at the time.
The rapes happened on three different occasions where the man would call the girl into his room and rape her then threaten to kill her if she told anyone. The girl reported the incidents to her aunt who did not believe her.
Eventually a virginity test was conducted and when the aunt was told that the girl was no longer a virgin, she believed the child and the man was arrested.
The matter was prosecuted by regional court prosecutor, Akhile Gcume who led the evidence of a district surgeon as well as the testimonies of the young girl and her sister.
Natasha Kara, Regional Spokesperson: DPP KZN National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), said the NPA welcomed the sentence.
