Taxi driver arrested in Oslo Beach
A traffic violation revealed a more serious crime.
POLICE swooped on a taxi driver who was found to be in possession of an unlicensed firearm in Oslo Beach this morning.
Warrant Officer Gerhard Prinsloo from Port Shepstone SAPS was driving along Marine Drive when he spotted a minibus taxi making an illegal U-turn.
Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said W/O Prinsloo signalled the driver to stop. The driver ignored the signal and sped off.
The officer requested back up and set off in pursuit of the taxi.
“He was joined by Warrant Officer Sydney Seaton from the Port Shepstone Tactical Response Team (TRT) and they managed to stop the vehicle. A search was conducted, and an unlicensed revolver and ammunition was found,” said Lt-Col Wiid.
The 30-year-old man was arrested and will be charged with reckless and negligent driving, failing to adhere to a police officer’s instruction, possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of unlicensed ammunition.
“This must send out a clear message that the SAPS will not tolerate reckless drivers who put other road users’ lives in danger,” added Lt-Col Wiid.
It was established that the firearm was stolen during a house breaking in the Uvongo area two weeks ago.
