Prostitution booming in Marburg
Some residents attributed the problem to the absence of police in the area especially at night.
SEX-for-sale has become a real headache for South Coast law enforcement.
Prostitution – the ‘world’s oldest profession’ – seems to be booming everywhere, but with Marburg now becoming one of the main hubs.
Residents are inundating the SAPS with complaints, but there is little they can do. Prostitutes are arrested and continue to ply their trade the moment they hit the streets again.
Poverty and unemployment are obviously exacerbating the situation and there were reports of women selling their bodies for as little as R50.
The Marburg Sports Grounds were apparently littered with condoms.
What to do? Residents called on the Herald to name and shame prostitutes and customers alike, but this is obviously impractical.
“There are women standing along Deepvale Road and Watterson Street every day from about 7pm up until the morning,” said a mother. “What do we say to our children when they see these women standing on street corners with short skirts?”
Newly elected chairman for Marburg Community Policing Forum (CPF), Dinesh Pillay, confirmed that prostitution was a huge problem in the Marburg area.
“This surge is definitely contributing to crime and drugs in the area. Prostitutes sell themselves to feed their addiction and then they start selling drugs as well,” said Mr Pillay.
He said police were doing their best, but it was a mammoth task.
He called on the community to work with the police and blow the whistle.
Mr Pillay had created a Whatsapp group for different roads in Marburg.
