‘Most wanted’ man arrested
The man is believed to be linked to an armed robbery in Harding in which a security guard and two police officers were shot and two police officers burnt to death.
A HARDING man who was on the police’s notorious ‘wanted’ list was arrested in Umlazi’s D Section last week.
The 30-year-old man was in possession of a pistol, two magazines and 26 live rounds of ammunition.
“The firearm – with its serial number filed off – was seized,” said police spokesman, Colonel Jay Naicker.
Following an initial investigation, police went to the man’s house in the Esiganseni area, Harding. There they seized a revolver with one live round of ammunition,” said Col Naicker.
The man was detained and charged with the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. He is due to appear in the Umlazi Magistrates Court soon pending further investigation.
“According to detectives, the arrested man is believed to be involved in numerous murder and robbery cases. It is also believed that he is linked to a case in Harding where a group of heavily armed men accosted cash-in transit security guards at a cash and carry store and robbed them of an undisclosed sum of cash.
“The robbers shot and killed a security guard and while fleeing, they shot and killed two police officers from Harding,” said Col Naicker.
The police vehicle caught alight and two police officers inside the vehicle burnt to death. A third survived after she was rescued from the burning vehicle by the community.
The seized firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in the killings and any other crimes in the country.
