Crime stats: Murder and burglary increase
There has been a sharp rise in some crimes over the past year.
SOUTH Coasters are scared: they are afraid of being murdered or burgled.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) released its crime statistics for the period April 2014 – March 2015 earlier today.
For the period April 2013 to March 2014, there were 168 murders on the South Coast. Between April 2014 and March 2015 that figure rose significantly, to 201.
This is as reported by local police stations including Port Edward, Margate, Port Shepstone, Southport, Hibberdene, Gamalakhe, Paddock and Harding. Izingolweni stats could not be obtained.
The South Coast’s ‘murder capital’ is the Port Shepstone policing area, with Harding taking second place.
There has also been a significant rise in burglaries at residential premises in most policing areas.
