Stealing food from mouths of babes
Community horrified about the robbery at the good-doers building.
THE offices of Child Welfare in Margate were burgled last Sunday and heaps of food stolen.
Manager Mandy Erasmus, said on staff were shocked to find on Monday morning that the building had been broken into and ransacked. “This is the first break-in at these premises in Uplands Road in three years,” she added.
Robbers entered by smashing a small kitchen window. They then ripped a kitchen cupboard off its hinges and raided the fridge and deep-freeze, fleeing with bags of mealie meal, samp and baby food.
“It’s just not right. Who breaks into an NPO office which keeps food to feed destitute people and children? It doesn’t make sense,” she said.
Mrs Erasmus added the incident was disheartening as it took a lot of effort to fund-raise to purchase the food. “From feeding the needy to counselling, our services stretch far and wide,” she added.
