One dead in Batstones Drift shooting

The injured had not just suffered injuries from the crash, but had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

A MAN has been killed and four others  injured in a shooting and collision at Batstones Drift, near Umtentweni, at around 7pm last night.

It is believed that occupants of a silver car opened fire with heavy calibre firearms as they were travelling past a silver bakkie.

“The driver and his two passengers were wounded,” said police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid. “It seems that the driver of the car then lost control of the vehicle and it collided with two oncoming vehicles.

“A man and a woman in one of the vehicles were injured.” One of the three men in the bakkie died at the scene. Several cartridges were found. The motive  for the shooting is not known at this stage and is still under investigation,” added Lt-Col Wiid.

According to Chris Botha of Netcare 911, “Paramedics found absolute carnage, with accident debris and the twisted frame of the vehicles obstructing the roadway. The  injured had not just sustained injuries from the crash but had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

“After triaging the injured it was found that two people had sustained life-threatening injuries while three others were in a serious condition. Paramedics from several services stabilised the injured at the scene before taking them to various hospitals area,” he said.
