Gun licences: Strict new rules apply
This enforcement will affect all firearm licences issued since 2004.
FIREARM owners who have not renewed their firearm licences 90 days before they expire are in for a surprise.
If you haven’t done this, you will now have ‘unlicensed’, ‘illegal’ firearms in your possession.
SAPS said the new policy would affect all firearm licences, permits or certificates issued since 2004. Before this new rule, firearm owners had been allowed a grace period, despite section 24(1) and 28(1) of the Firearms Control Act of 2000 (Act 60 of 2000) prohibiting late renewals.
The SAPS will now act strictly to the letter of the law. If you are not compliant, you will have to hand the unlicensed firearm into a dealer to sell or apply afresh for the licence… or hand the weapon in to be destroyed.
