Lying under oath is a crime
A case of defeating the ends of justice was opened and the young man was arrested.
A MAN (22) man has been charged with defeating the ends of justice after he falsely reported a carjacking.
He had claimed that he was about to alight from his vehicle in the Umgababa area on Monday, November 23, at approximately 12.40am, when he was accosted by two unidentified suspects, who robbed him of his silver Porsche at gunpoint.
The man was not hurt, and a case was opened. Umkomaas SAPS took over the investigation and the vehicle was recovered at Warner Beach on the same day. Enquiries revealed that the complainant had lied.
A case of defeating the ends of justice was opened and the young man was arrested. He appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrates’ Court on November 25. The case was postponed to December 9 for a plea.
Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, praised the members of the force for the swift arrest of the suspect. “We would like to warn people to refrain from reporting cases knowing that they are false. It is a crime to make a false statement under oath that one has been hijacked or robbed,” said Lt-Gen Ngobeni.
