Cosatu plans to hold march

Cosatu plans to march against poor working conditions and the exploitation of workers.

COSATU Port Shepstone branch will embark on a march to fight against poor working conditions and exploitation of workers on Friday this week.

According to the union’s chairman Ernest Mkhize, the march will start from Chris Hani Square in Port Shepstone at 10am and proceed to the Port Shepstone Civic Centre, where a memorandum outlining their grievances will be handed over to the relevant stakeholders.

“The march is for a number of labour-related issues, including failure by employers to comply with the Labour Relations Act, especially the new amendments as enacted in Section 198 of the act, as well as concerns about the banning of labour brokers and security tenders by the municipality,” he said.

The union’s secretary Mdu Danca added that the decline in the pass rate of matric pupils in the Ugu district as well as the creation of internship programmes that absorb the youth in the long term instead of letting them go back to sit at home after completion of the programme are among other burning issues which will be included in the memorandum.

Various unions affiliated to Cosatu are expected to be a part of the march.
