10 homework tips for 2016
When parents get involved in homework, children are encouraged to do better at school.
MOST school going children need an extra push to get going with their homework.
Here are a few tips parents can use to create some structure and organisation for homework time.
*Communicate with the teacher to be fully aware of how much homework there actually is.
*Set a study schedule. Children need some time to relax after school before tackling their homework. Don’t do homework close to bedtime because the children may be too tired.
*Ask your child to divide homework into ‘what I can do myself’ and ‘what I need help with’. Help only when your child can’t do the work independently. This enhances responsibility and independence.
*Just as they can’t eat dessert without first finishing all their vegetables hold off TV and playtime until homework is completed.
*Provide an adequate, well lit and well ventilated study area without a lot of distractions. Everything should be within reach, for example a dictionary, paper and pens.
*Praise your child for completing their homework.
*Make sure you are nearby so your child is able to ask questions or receive help.
*Check the completed homework. Do not correct it unless you have checked with the teacher. Seeing the pattern in errors is often helpful to the teacher.
*Study groups are often a good strategy. Your child may benefit from studying with one or two classmates. However, make sure that they are using the time to study.
*Allow bathroom, snack and drink breaks, but insist on completion of tasks.
