Local PSL star dies in crash
Mondli Cele died after his car veered off the road and into the Msunduzi River in Pietermaritzurg during the early hours of Sunday morning.
FORMER Gamalakhe United soccer star Mondli Cele died after he was involved in a car crash in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The 27-year-old old Maritzburg United midfielder, who scored an opening goal in a match that ended in a 3-3 draw against PSL giants Orlando Pirates on Saturday evening at Harry Gwala Stadium, died after the car in which he was travelling plunged into the Duzi river on Park Drive, in Pietermaritzburg.
Cele made his debut in the Premier Soccer League during the 2014/15 season, after he was spotted in a Nedbank Cup challenge for Gamalakhe against Santos in Cape Town. According to police reports, Cele and SABC sports journalist Delisile Ngwenya died in the accident. KwaZulu-Natal traffic inspectorate spokesman Zinhle Mngomezulu confirmed this.
Cele’s former Gamalakhe United coach, Keketso Mokoatle, described him as a very humble player who was passionate about soccer. “I would like to send condolences to his family, fans and friends. This came as a shock to all of us as we were still expecting to see more from the talented young player,” said Mr Mokoatle.
