New school opens its doors
Ronald Wood, chief inspector for the Department of Education, is confident that any issues would be resolved by the end of the first term.
NEW school on the block, Hibiscus Primary in Margate Ext 3, is looking very smart despite a few teething problems.
The Department of Education told Herald reporters on Monday that everything is under control and that more desks and chairs have been ordered. This comes after the Herald fielded calls about the lack of equipment at the new school.
Ronald Wood, chief inspector for the department, was confident that issues would be resolved by the end of the first term.
“Former principal of Margate Primary, John Reid, who is now the acting circuit manager for Margate, is even on site ensuring that all issues are resolved,” he said.
So far, 296 primary school-aged pupils have enrolled. The brand new, face-brick school, which took about two years to build, has been erected to accommodate 1 200 pupils, from Grade R to Grade 7. The school has 13 teachers, three heads of department, one deputy principal and a principal.
Impressively, the school has a kitchen from which to run a feeding scheme, computers, two multimedia classrooms and administration offices.
Mr Wood urged parents to register their children who have not yet enrolled at a school. “There are places at both Hibiscus Primary and Margate Middle School, so no pupil should be sitting at home,” he said.
Work is currently taking place to complete the parking area.
The school is open from 7.30am to 2pm for registration. For more information call 072 2843843.
