Ramble was a great experience

Southbroom's very own breath-taking Frederika Preserve offers more than just amazing scenery.

WALKERS from around the coast headed off to the Wessa ramble through the nine-hectare Frederika Nature Preserve in Southbroom last Saturday.

The little forest is a special place near the tranquil beach and the well-managed trail offers a breathtaking experience as one gets to learn about the various plants within the forest.

The preserve is a haven for over 117 indigenous plant species and comprises mature, virgin dune forest bordering the Southbroom golf course.

The walk started from the beach access into the forest, right through to the deck which offers beautiful views of the forest. Visible signage throughout makes the trail user-friendly and more educational for those with enquiring minds.

Dave Hallé from the Southbroom Conservancy, which mantains and protects the forest, led the trail walk and kept the novices well informed about the various plants spotted and answering any questions.

Chairman of Southern KZN WESSA, Paddy Norman, said that continued alien plant removal and regular patrolling to prevent debarking of trees, and the elimination snares and trespassing, was an ongoing process aimed at reserving this gem.
