Detective detained for threatening to shoot motorist

A DURBAN police officer is under investigation after allegedly crashing into an Umzinto man’s trailer then punching him on the nose and threatening to shoot him.
It is also alleged that Detective Sergeant Mkmaliphi Cele (41) was driving in an unmarked police car without his lights on and was under the influence of alcohol.
“A 26-year-old motorist was driving, trailer in tow, on the R612 Ixopo Main Road near the entrance to Umzinto in on January 31 at about 8pm, when Det-Sgt Cele apparently approached from the opposite direction with his vehicle’s headlights switched off,” said Scottburgh SAPS communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.
The detective’s vehicle struck the motorist’s trailer. When they stopped, Det-Sgt Cele identified himself as a policeman and allegedly punched the other driver on his nose. He then grabbed the man and threatened to shoot him. Fearing for his safety, the driver and his two passengers quickly fled.
Det Cele was later tracked down and arrested by the Umzinto K9 Unit.
