Sand artist makes his mark

Expect to see some Valentine sculptures on Uvongo beach.

FOR the last 10 years sand sculptor, Thabani Dayi of Gamalakhe, has used his talent to earn an income on Uvongo beach.

While others chose to steal, Thabani learnt the skill of sand art from his late brother. “After my parents died I chose this job,” he said. In order to make a living he relies on kind-hearted beachgoers to take photographs and give a donation.

The friendly 23-year-old acknowledged how important it was for visitors to come to the coast as they support him. “I even have pictures of my work taken by Americans in my house,” he said proudly.

And what about St Valentine’s Day? Thabani smiles, nods and replies, “yes, they are coming.”
