Relief for thirsty Gamalakhe

Gamalakhe residents will surely be pleased to see the back of water tankers as they look forward to a steady water supply from June.

GAMALAKHE residents will soon be able to slake their thirst with a reliable water supply, Ugu District Municipality has promised.

About 8 500 households in Gamalakhe, Qinabout, Esigedleni and some parts of Tin-Town and KwaNositha have probably been the hardest hit by the drought and water supply problems. They often had to rely on water tankers as taps ran dry.

The good news is that the multi-million rand Gamalakhe Water Security Supply project is nearing completion.

Ugu Spokesman France Zama said the project is expected to be completed by June.

“On completion, the capacity of our water infrastructure – which is currently under stress – will be enhanced to cope with the high demand and offer an uninterrupted supply,” he said on Tuesday this week.

Apart from the water, the project has also provided a much-needed cash injection to the areas.

“Through this project, 30 local people were employed with one sub-contractor from Gamalakhe. More job opportunities are expected to be created as the project progresses, which will assist in curbing the triple challenge of unemployment, poverty and inequality faced by the district.”
