JUST IN: Umzimkulu River bridge to close completely for four days

Motorists using the Umzimkulu River bridge face a major disruption this week, with the bridge set to close completely while critical work is carried out.

The Umzimkulu River bridge will be closed to all traffic from 05:00 on Wednesday, August 19, until 17:00 on Saturday, August 22.

Selvan Chetty, deputy chairperson of the Ugu District Community Police Forum Board, said the complete closure was necessary to allow the bridge jacking process to be completed safely and without interruption.

“This complete closure has become necessary to ensure that the jacking process of the bridge is completed without interruption and with due consideration to safety as well as time constraints,” said Chetty.

Residents and motorists who regularly use the bridge are urged to plan ahead and follow all traffic signs and instructions from personnel managing and redirecting traffic.

Law enforcement officers, CPF members and security companies will assist where necessary during the closure.

Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time and make alternative arrangements before setting out.

Closure times:

  • Closed: 05:00, Wednesday, August 19
  • Reopens: 17:00, Saturday, August 22
  • Affected: All traffic
  • Reason: Bridge jacking works
