Interested in woodwork?
Members are concerned that there appears to be no continuation of the expertise current members have and that these skills will ultimately be lost.
SOUTH Coast Association of Woodworkers (SCAW) is a small group of people who love creating items from wood – toy making, wood turning, cabinet making, general carpentry and maintenance around the home.
There is a dwindling level of skills in this arena. Members are concerned that there appears to be no continuation of the expertise that the current members have and that these skills will ultimately be lost.
Contributing factors are the decision not to include woodwork as part of the school curriculum and the disbanding of apprenticeships. It is not known whether young people are not interested in taking on this hobby or whether they are unable to find mentors.
A chance meeting recently led a member to realise that, given the opportunity, the youth still do have interests in the basic and exciting aspects of life.
The members of the various woodworking groups would like to encourage both young and old to contact them and see whether they have the ability and interest in following woodwork as a hobby or even developing their skills further.
The projects range from the simple to the more advanced and the level and quantity of work you undertake can be adjusted to the time you have available. An advantage of woodwork is that you can generally do a little bit, put it aside and come back whenever and as often as you wish.
To start with you need not make any expensive outlay on tools or equipment as members will be happy to assist and work with you.
