Water problems continue
Ugu District Municipality has had a number of problems on its hands this week.
THREE water-related issues have been brought to the Herald’s attention this week. With strict water restrictions in place, let’s hope these problems are cleared up sooner rather than later.
1. Broken water pipe in David Drive, Hibberdene: Mega amounts of water have been spurting out like a massive fountain for more than a week. Several people reported this to the Herald, including Hibberdene resident, Trevor Wardell, who said that it had been reported to Ugu at least three times and, while the calls had been acknowledged, nothing has been done to rectify the problem. “You can hear the water a mile away. It’s absolute nonsense. We have to adhere to water restrictions but Ugu is not taking this seriously,” he said.
France Zama, Ugu District Municipality spokesman, yesterday (Wednesday) responded: “A technician has been deployed on site and repair work is under way. All should be sorted out in a few hours.
2. Ongoing problems at Oslo Beach pump house: Residents are tired of the sewage flowing freely from a manhole cover, the overwhelming stench and the unbearable noise of the pump house at the end of Castor Road. Despite work being done on the pump house for most of last weekend, residents say the problem has not been solved.
Mr Zama’s response: “Work continues to find a long-term solution to this problem, which will also have significant financial implications needing to be catered for in the upcoming financial year. In the interim, technicians will implement mitigation measures until the implementation of the long-term solution. Again, the municipality requests the community’s patience while work is being done to solve this problem”.
3. Large crater left unattended at Margate Taxi Rank: A business owner contacted the Herald, worried company’s forklift might fall into the giant hole.
Mr Zama’s response: “The Herald was notified yesterday (Wednesday) that a team had been deployed and the hole had been backfilled”.
