Bad roads a holiday nightmare
Pieces of tyre on the side of the road were testimony to the damage caused.
POTHOLES and bad road surfaces spoiled the Easter weekend for several motorists who complained to the Herald that they had been left with costly repairs.
Ramsey Avenue in Port Edward was the main bugbear as the contractor tasked to do the repairs missed a good few spots and motorists had to use one lane or risk a stony ride.
On the R61 near Port Edward, a huge crack in the road was forcing motorists to drive in the emergency lane.
Pieces of tyre on the side of the road were testimony to the damage caused.
Business owners in the area said that most of their clients tried to avoid these roads and, therefore, business was slow.
“The hideous surface dressings in the form of mini humps along the R61 also cause cars to swerve,” said one businessman.
In Manaba, Myra Avenue and Queen Elizabeth Drive are also problematic.
Residents say they have fought for the past two years to have a 15cm split in the middle of the road repaired.
Ward 1 Councillor Dave Watson said that he had communicated with Hibiscus Coast Municipality roads department and they promised to get the contractor back to work. He confirmed that cars had been damaged and motorists were frustrated.
MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu said it was rather disappointing that contractors who were awarded tenders were not honouring their contracts.
