Strangled infant tossed in pit

The infant was dug out of a toilet pit.

A MOTHER of three allegedly strangled her week-old infant and then tossed its body into a toilet pit at Lukholo village near Bizana last Friday.

Neighbours and family apparently noticed that her pregnant belly had gone down and assumed that she had given birth. But they never saw the baby and the mother was vague when they asked questions.

They only became suspicious when they noticed a funny smell coming from the toilet pit.

Police were called and the woman led them to the pit where the body was discovered.

She allegedly confessed she gave birth at home and strangled her crying baby before throwing the body in the pit.

Mzamba police station commander Lieutenant-Colonel Devan John said the woman is believed to be mentally unstable.
