Security guard shot during break-in

Three men broke in to the shopping centre in the early hours of this morning.

A SECURITY guard was shot during an attempted break-in at the Telkom Mobile store at the Shelly Centre in the early hours of this morning.

The robbery was foiled by the centre’s security guards.

Police spokesman, Captain Gerald Mfeka said  three men entered the center at about 3am. Two of the men were armed, one with a crowbar and one with a handgun.

“A shot was fired which struck a security guard in the neck. The robbers then proceeded to smash the window of the Telkom store, however nothing was taken,” he said.

“Thankfully the security guard’s injuries are not fatal and a full recovery is expected,” said Shelly Centre’s marketing manager, Tessa Apostolides.

She added that management at the centre is extremely proud of the security staff and praised their brave intervention and quick thinking.

The robbers fled in a white VW Polo with ND registration plates. No arrests have yet been made.
