Two-time rapist gets 35-year sentence
Instead of helping the victim, he too raped her.
NANO Bhekokhwakhe Jama (26) from Gamalakhe has been sentenced in the Port Shepstone Regional Court to 35 years for the rape of two women and for robbery with aggravating circumstances.
One of the women was walking home from a get-together with friends in Gamalakhe when she was accosted by a man in the street, dragged onto the pavement and raped. Jama arrived on the scene, but instead of helping the victim, he raped her as well.
In the other incident, a visitor from Mpumulanga was walking to her niece’s house in Qinabout during the evening when she was attacked and robbed by Jama and another man. Although the other man urged Jama not to accost the victim further, he dragged her to an abandoned shack where he raped her.
The court described Jama, who claimed that both the women were drunk and consented to having sex with him, as an opportunistic and unmitigated liar.
In sentencing Jama to 35 years’ imprisonment, Regional Magistrate Johann Bester, stated that, although ill-advised in view of the prevalence of rape, women had the right to be on the street at night without risk of rape and that it was the duty of the courts to remove from society those that made it impossible for them to be.
