Twenty calls later…

During the long wait hundreds of litres of water were wasted.

IT took days for Ugu District Municipality to respond to a serious water leak in Ramsgate last week, just one of many complaints the Herald has received for months on end.

In the interim, hundreds (or even thousands) of litres of water are wasted.

A serious water leak in View Road in Ramsgate was reported to the Herald by Nols van der Merwe last Thursday after Ugu failed to come out to repair the leak which had been running for three days.

“We must have called Ugu at least 20 times, even a guard from Wolf Security called them… it was just shocking,” he said.

* Then, residents called the Herald on Monday morning this week regarding a major water leak in Howard Avenue in Trafalgar.

They had called Ugu and were transferred from ‘pillar to post’.

Yet another caller reported back that the team had arrived some two hours later to mend the problem and couldn’t complain about their service. One wonders why the inconsistency?

France Zama, spokesman for Ugu, said that a team of capable technicians had been deployed to the sites to attend to the leaks and repair them accordingly. “It must also be noted that the municipality does not deliberately ignore leaks, but ensures that all reports made through the call centre are attended to timeously,” he said. He said the municipality pleads with communities to use all recognised municipal platforms to report burst pipes and leaks.

Another caller reported that sprinklers were on at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre last Friday, during a time when parts of the country were experiencing severe drought.

Mr Zama responded that, as a consequence of the drought, the Ugu District Municipality had implemented certain measures to mitigate the effects and accordingly, had introduced water restrictions.

“We are aware of the challenges, which include certain establishments not adhering to set restrictions and we will attend to this. We appeal to all our users to please cooperate so that we can ensure availability of supply,” he said.
