Security guards injured in shopping centre robbery
When they failed to gain access to the ATM, they moved on to rob two other stores.
THREE armed robbers opened fire on two security guards, injuring both, at a shopping centre in Izingolweni in the early hours of yesterday (Thursday).
“The robbers gained entry to the centre via the back entrance,” said police spokesman, Captain Gerald Mfeka. “They shot the guards and began vandalising a bank ATM in an attempt to steal the cash.
“When they failed to get the money out, they broke into a meat store and a clothing store,” said Captain Mfeka.
The men fled, taking a substantial sum of cash from the meat market and clothing from the clothing shop.
One of the security guards was shot in the stomach and the other in the leg.
They were were taken to hospital for treatment. No arrests have yet been made and Izingolweni police are investigating two counts of attempted murder, two counts of business robbery and malicious damage to property.
Police also recovered a 9mm cartridge at the scene.
