Promised upgrade a no-show

The revamp is still not under way.

PLANS to convert the Port Shepstone taxi rank into an integrated, ‘intermodal’ facility as part of the urban renewal programme are still not under way.

The plan, which featured the existing bus rank being converted into a temporary taxi rank at a cost of R10-million, was to include a shopping mall.

Since July last year, promises to kick-start the project have not been fulfilled and business people are getting fed up with the long wait and not being kept in the loop by Hibiscus Coast Municipality.

During a council meeting held in November last year municipal manager, Max Mbili said the project was expected to be under way in January. To date, things are still the same.

The project also meant more employment opportunities and a boost for the local economy.

Spokesman for HCM, Simon April, said; “Although there were some unforeseen delays, a preferred bidder had been appointed for this development with a development entitlement agreement having been signed.

“The plan is to have a contractor for the temporary taxi rank appointed before the end of June 2016 and the construction for the project (intermodal facility) to start before the end of the year.”
