Soccer legend is mourned

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has paid tribute to the soccer legend.

THE soccer community is mourning the sudden loss of soccer star Essop Moosa (58) who died recently.

Mr Moosa was born in Port Shepstone and he developed a talent for soccer at an early age. Soon after matriculating from Port Shepstone Secondary he played for Natal High School in Durban and for other soccer clubs, including Port Shepstone United, Berea Football Club in Durban, Vereeniging Old Boys’ Football Club in Johannesburg and Swaraj in Johannesburg.

His cousin, Ayub Moosa, described him as a man who influenced many on the South Coast. “He was humble and dedicated a major part of his life to soccer,” said Ayub.

He represented South Natal and played in Cape Town trials. He was also spotted by PRO Club from Federation Pro League in Durban. When he returned to Port Shepstone United, he led the club to the Clover KO Cup twice, in 1976 and 1986.

When he hung up his soccer boots, he opened a shop in Bushy Vales near Southbroom. He closed the store and opened another business in Bizana. In less than a year he had been shot in the chest and closed his business.

He then moved to Newcastle and, although he had hung up his soccer boots, he coached soccer there. While playing soccer in Newcastle last Thursday he had a heart attack and died on the way to hospital.

Mr Moosa leaves  his wife Salma, two sons and a daughter. The South African Football Association (SAFA) has paid tribute to the soccer legend.
