Police captain to appear in court

He is currently out on bail.

CAPTAIN Jaychand Kannai (50), who faces a charge of corruption, appeared in the Port Shepstone Regional Court last Friday.

The case was postponed to tomorrow, Thursday, June 2.

His attorney, Dashen Naidoo, told the court the defence was ready with a plea. However, he asked for an adjournment as there was conflict with the prosecution regarding the direction it was taking with regards to sentence.

The Port Shepstone policeman, who is currently out on bail, was arrested in April by the Hawks.

Cpt Kannai was arrested after receiving a final payment of R500 from a complainant who was previously arrested for reckless or negligent driving in Port Shepstone.

The amount of R1 500 was allegedly solicited from the complainant after he was promised that his case would be quashed. Cpt Kannai was intercepted after collecting the money.
