Fake illness leads to escape
Police are on the hunt for an awaiting trial prisoner who escaped from a clinic.
AN awaiting trial prisoner managed to escape from police custody after feigning illness.
According to police spokesman, Captain Gerald Mfeka, Thembelani Nkonyeni (28), from Gcilima near Southbroom was taken to the Mvutshini clinic near Margate last Friday after he claimed to be sick.
“Police were told that his condition was serious and he needed urgent medical attention. He was placed in a wheelchair, as he said he could not walk to a police vehicle,” said Capt Mfeka.
Once at the clinic, Nkonyeni asked to use the toilet. A police officer stood guard inside while another stood outside.
“A few minutes later the officer posted outside noticed Nkonyeni running towards the bush. Back-up was called and police, together with community members, searched the area but could not find him,” said Capt Mfeka.
It is thought he escaped through a toilet window.
Nkonyeni faces criminal charges ranging from burglary at residential premises, house robbery and rape to possession of drugs and dangerous weapons.
