Hibberdene home a nightmare
The abandoned house is chasing away property investors.
STRIPPED down to its bare blocks.
This is what a Herald journalist discovered when she investigated an abandoned house in Woodgrange Road in Hibberdene.
The home, which is believed to belong to the municipality, has been standing empty for more than two years.
The last tenant allegedly moved out of the home because the rent was too high.
Despite an email to Hibiscus Coast Municipal spokesman, Simon April, no response had been received at the time of writing.
Sadly, nothing much is left of the once lovely home, which boasts a sea view. Everything has been trashed or removed – from the gutters to electric cables, geyser, windows and security gates.
The garden is badly overgrown and the pool has turned into a green swamp and is probably breeding mosquitoes.
Jan van Tonder, (72), said the house has put people off wanting to invest or purchase property in the area.
“My wife and I are scared to go out at night as vagrants move in and out of the property,” he said.
Mr van Tonder pointed out that many people don’t have homes and even if the house had been rented out for R500 a month it would be in a better state than it is now.
“It’s going to cost hundreds of thousands to repair this home,” he added.
He also called on the municipality to assist the owners of private property in Woodgrange who have not cut their overgrown stands.
