SARS warns against tax scams
Scam artists pretending to be representatives from SARS have approached unsuspecting small businesses to demand ‘outstanding payments’ on undeclared taxes.
OVER the past few months there have been a few incidents reported to SARS of scam artists who have demanded money to wipe out debts.
Taxpayers and traders with outstanding accounts are reminded they must resolve the matter directly with SARS.
Those with queries are encouraged to call the SARS Contact Centre at 0800 00 7277 (0800 00 SARS) and taxpayers should report any suspicious activity to the SARS Anti-Corruption and Fraud Hotline , toll free, at 0800 00 2870.
All outstanding tax, VAT or duties must only be deposited directly into SARS bank accounts. No money should be paid over to debt collectors or self-proclaimed SARS officials.
In fact, collectors who want money to be handed over to them must be reported immediately.
