Arsenal seized at Sheppie warehouse
Interest was piqued when some 15 to 20 firearms were seen at the Port Shepstone charge office.
A LARGE arsenal of heavy-duty firearms was apparently seized by police from a warehouse in Marburg this week.
But that’s all the Herald knows as neither police nor the Hawks will comment at this stage.
Our reporters tried to interview bystanders at the warehouse. Nobody would speak to them and one person even warned them to ‘stay away’.
If these guys see you here, you could be in trouble.
The Herald visited the warehouse after receiving a tip-off about the police raid. Vehicles belonging to Port Shepstone detectives and police were parked outside, but the reporters were not allowed to go any further.
Then a few hours later, the newspaper received a call from a person who happened to be at the Port Shepstone charge office when police officers brought in the firearms, and were doing the ‘paperwork’.
He said there were between 15 and 20 firearms – R4 rifles, AK-47s, heavy duty hunting rifles and a shotgun – all in excellent condition, almost brand new.
The witness, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “It would be a different story it the firearms were army issue, being stored safely, but why high-powered hunting rifles?
“I know my weapons and these could easily take down an elephant.
It was scary stuff. I’m just thankful these weapons are off the street.
Herald journalists tried their best to glean more information before going to print, but in vain.
All the usual sources just dried up.
Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said he was still waiting for information.
