Margate man jailed for 80 years
In most of the cases, the modus operandi was the same.
THABANE Ncane of Margate was recently sentenced to life in jail for murder and a total of 80 years’ imprisonment for other offences in the Pietermaritzburg High Court.
The 28-year-old had a total of eight counts against him: four of robbery with aggravating circumstances, three of attempted murder and one of murder.
The court heard that Ncane had terrorised the communities of Gcilima, Mzimakwe, and Mankuthane since April last year.
In most of the cases, the modus operandi was the same, with Ncane robbing foreign shop owners.
With the assistance of Port Shepstone K9 unit, local criminal record centres (LCRC) and senior detectives, Ncane was arrested on April 24.
On April 23, 2015, suspects armed with firearms robbed a business owner of airtime, cigarettes and cellphones at gunpoint before fleeing.
Ncane was linked to the case.
The following day, April 24, Ncane was in a taxi travelling from Izinqoleni to Margate. While the driver was dropping off passengers, Ncane demanded cash from the driver.
When the driver fled, Ncane fired a shot at him, but missed.
However, a passenger, Thandeka Khandayo, (35), was shot and killed during the robbery and her handbag was stolen.
Ncane fled but was later arrested and linked to this and a number of other cases in the area.
Investigating officer Constable Zolile Sibisi from Margate was commended for her sterling efforts in einging Ncane to justice.
