Great lesson for student cops
The man ran when he saw the police vehicle coming to a standstill.
A FIREARM stolen in Gauteng back in 1999 was recovered by police in Mkholombe near Bhobhoyi last Thursday.
A contingent of student constables was being shown the ropes by their older, more experienced colleagues from the crime prevention unit in Port Shepstone when the weapon was discovered.
The crime prevention unit, accompanied by three student constables, was conducting random patrol and stop and search duties when they spotted a suspicious man walking on the N2.
“The man ran into nearby bush when he saw the police vehicle coming to a standstill,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.
The local K9 unit, in the form of Warrant Officer Johan Terreblanche and Constable Ashley Ramsingh, responded.
Within minutes patrol dog, Shaka and handler Cst Ramsingh had cornered the suspect, and he was searched. He was found in possession of a 7.65 mm Browning pistol and six rounds of ammunition.
“This firearm was established to have been stolen in Gauteng in May 1999,” said Lt-Col Wiid.
The man, in his 30s and believed to be from the Eastern Cape, was charged with the possession of a firearm and ammunition without a license.
Investigations are also being done in the Eastern Cape to see if he is linked to criminal activities there.
* There are currently seven student constables at Port Shepstone. They have completed their 10-month basic training at college and are now undergoing with practical training at the station. Warrant Officer ‘PC’ Naicker, a field training officer, oversees their practical experience.
