Salty water fears return

The lack of fresh drinking water earlier this year is still front of mind for many.

SALT-in-the-water fears arose again with some Hibberdene, Sheppie, Uvongo and Ramsgate residents complaining this has been a thirsty week.

Many annoyed residents phoned the Herald to complain that taps had been dry for days and others complained that water was salty.

“The soap just wasn’t lathering. I thought I was imagining things and then I tasted the water. It was salty,” said a resident.

Ugu media spokesman France Zama said, due to current spring tides, there was an increase in ‘conductivity levels’. However, these levels were under the limit of 170sm.

“Since Monday this week, the conductivity levels have been fluctuating, but this is not an alarming situation. Technicians are monitoring the levels and pumps are being shut down at intervals. This is done as and when levels rise as a precautionary measure to avoid total shutdown.”

The municipality assured that it would continue to provide quality drinking water that was within the South African National Drinking Standards.
