Be cautious in the CBD
Two doctors' rooms and a police office in Port Shepstone have been targeted by thieves.
POLICE have warned visitors to the Port Shepstone CBD to be careful after a number of people were mugged and three businesses broken into recently.
Last Saturday, two doctors’ rooms in Reynolds Street, as well as the premises of the police Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) in Bisset Street were burgled, with computers and screens being stolen.
In all three cases the doors of these premises were forced open.
Pedestrians targeted
Last Wednesday a 43-year-old man was walking on the R102 near the traffic light intersection at the hospital when two men approached him, held a knife to his stomach and demanded his cellphone. Fifteen minutes later, a 22-year-old woman was threatened by a man with a knife in Aiken Street and also robbed of two cellphones. The robbery took place whilst she was talking on one of the cellphones.
The same night at about 8.30pm, a 17-year-old boy was walking in Deepvale Road, Marburg, when he was approached by two men who threatened him with a knife. They took his cellphone. He managed to alert a security guard from a security company who then arrested one of the robbers. He was detained and will appear in court soon.
Pay attention
Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said the community should be alert when walking in town, especially when it was busy. “Always pay attention to your surroundings and when you notice suspicious people approaching, move away quickly. If you suspect that you are going to be attacked and robbed, make a noise so that other pedestrians are aware and can assist,” she said.
Station commander Colonel William Slabbert and his team will be concentrating on these robberies. The police have also warned pupils on holiday to be vigilant. “With the schools on holiday, pupils must be very cautious and not walk alone, carry large amounts of money or talk on phones while walking,” said Lt-Col Wiid.
